Manfred was probably best-known for his design of the 1962 west wing addition and 1972 south wing addition to the Sisters of St. Joseph Mother House in North Bay, Ontario. The building houses Catholic nuns and contains senior citizens’ apartments.

The design of the new wings clearly shows Manfred’s touch with its layered balconies, rounded roof, and European esthetic. The chapel he created for the south wing features curved lofts finished in blonde wood, drawing the eye to an arched and visually dominant window behind the altar. Facing Lake Nipissing, the window’s design allows the chapel to be bathed in natural light–including spectacular vistas at sunrise and sunset. The overall effect is stunning and inspires a worshipful appreciation of nature’s beauty in a religious setting.

Special thanks to Sr. Mae Kierans, CSJ, MA, Archivist for the tour of the Mother House and her insights into Manfred’s contributions.
