Relation of Interior to Exterior Private Space: The Garden
Man is not born to spend all his life in a cave or even within four walls. One of the differences between merely existing and living is the joy we get from seeing nature, living within nature, or watching the beauties of plants, the play of light and shadow on them, the change of the seasons, the change of colors and mood. Without beauty man cannot live and man-made objects of beauty or nowadays rare.
In addition to this, especially in times that are not so good, any amounts of food or fruit which one raises for oneself without chemical poisoning are very welcome.
All nations, all systems of government recognize the need for private gardens–for experience shows that per meter private or privately tended garden lots exceed by far the output of state operated or big business farms.
I believe the greatest Improvement for life in the poor nations will be the provision of private garden space to every person either in small ground plots or preferably on the roofs of their dwellings. Then the ensuing greening of the cities will make them very livable and beautiful and indicate real progress and maturing of architecture and urban development.
